Botanicals may reduce multi-drug resistance in Cancer

Drug resistance occurs when cancer patients fail to receive effective treatment with chemotherapy and radiation. Living cells contain pumps to remove the toxins from our bodies on a daily basis and since most of the chemotherapy drugs are extremely toxic, these pumps remove them as quickly as possible, thus reducing the effectiveness of the treatment. These defense mechanisms often continue to function and may be more effective in cancer cells. Botanical agents provide measures in helping to reduce this resistance. Compounds from garlic, turmeric, and crucifer vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and brussel-sprouts have shown to increase the effect of chemotherapy by enhancing theapoptosis affect in the tumor cell. Apoptosis occurs when the tumor cell is dying. Also, quercetin, a flavonoid, found in many herbs and foods like fruits and vegetables (ex. Onions) is also shown to reverse the drug resistance in-vitro. The consumption of these herbs, especially turmeric, and garlic, along with the vegetables listed above can prove to be highly beneficial for patients receiving chemotherapy and radiation treatment. I recommend taking 2 servings of vegetables along with 4-5 servings of fruits a day alongside the treatment as well as for the prevention of cancer.

Alcoholic Liver Cirrhosis and Ayurvedic herbs

Alcohol consumption is directly related to alcoholic cirrhosis where the liver becomes fibrosed and the liver enzymes are elevated in the blood, causing injury and stress to the liver. Cirrhosis of the liver is a serious disease and is known to cause death. Many patients who consume wine moderately have elevated liver enzymes. Liver is a vital organ in the body and its main function is detoxification. When it becomes stressed, the body cannot detoxify completely, which results in the creation of many diseases. In females, the consumption of alcohol increases their chance of getting breast cancer by three times, due to its interference with hormone augmentation: another important function of the liver.Time and time again, ayurvedic herbs have shown to reverse the cirrhosis of liver both in animal models and human research studies. Herbs liketinospora cardifolia, andrographis paniculata, phyllanthus amarus, Tephrosia purpura, boerhaavia diffusa, swertia chirata, picrorhiza kurroa, solanum nigrum and many more have shown to reverse the alcoholic cirrhosis as well as reduce the level of liver enzymes. These herbs prove to be effective because of their various anti oxidant properties. So, if you like your glass of wine, you should take preparation like Ayush Herbs’ ‘Livit-2’, which happens to be a combination of the herbs mentioned above, to protect your liver from being damaged.

Parkinson’s disease and Mucuna Prurens

Parkinson’s disease is a Neurodegenerative disorder, affecting over one million Americans. The cause of this disease is unknown, however the symptoms are eminent. Parkinson’s disease often begins insidiously with a typical tremor, like “pill rolling”. Dementia occurs in approximately 50% of the patients. Many victims of this disease use popular drugs such as Levodopa and carbidopa that have unhealthy long-term effects. After 2-5 years of treatment, more than 50% of the patients begin to experience fluctuations in response to the medicines. The herb Mucuna prurens, along with massage therapy, biofeedback and acupuncture may provide a healthier alternative treatment. According to a study published in the Journal of Neurology Science, the Mucuna Prurens preparation exhibited a better response on patients compared to those who were taking Levodopa/carbidopa. To top it all, the side effects of Mucuna were very minimal. One of my patients has experienced the benefits of Mucuna first hand. He is an eighty-four year old man who has been suffering with Parkinson’s disease for many years. Upon my suggestion, his wife asked him to take Ayush Herbs’ ‘Macuna Plus’ (prepared with the herb: Mucuna Prurens). He began taking this preparation along with his usual Levodopa /carbidopa. Once, during a month long vacation to Hawaii, he accidentally forgot hisLevodopa/carbidopa at home and ended up taking only the Macuna plus. He then realized that his symptoms were better managed with this particular formula. Ah! The magic of Mucuna!I recommend standardized extract of Mucuna prurens 500 mg three times per day to my patients. Doses may need to be adjusted depending on the extent of the condition. For more information about Dr. Virender Sodhi and the Ayurvedic Clinic, please visit www.ayurvedicscience.com.
